Vol. 505 No. 6

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

96 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has to proceed with the closure of Clancy Barracks; the time schedule for this; when meaningful negotiations will commence with the representative organisations of the personnel affected; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14302/99]

The Government, on 15 July, 1998, approved a programme of evacuation and sale of six barracks which are considered surplus to military requirements. The barracks in question are located at Fermoy, Ballincollig, Naas, Kildare, Castleblayney and Clancy Barracks, Dublin. Clancy Barracks will be vacated by 1 July 2000 and arrangements will be made for its disposal following its evacuation.

I met with representatives of both RACO and PDFORRA last July on the day on which the decision to close barracks was taken. Discussions on the implications for the personnel concerned of the implementation of the decision to close barracks were held with both associations and will be held in the future as the need arises.
With regard to the civilian employees – 100 approximately – employed at Clancy Barracks, I have arranged a meeting with a representative delegation from the trade union group which represents them at the Joint Industrial Council for State Industrial Employees for 17 June, 1999 to update them on the current position.
