Vol. 506 No. 2

Written Answers. - Educational Institutions Funding.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

451 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education and Science if the University of Maynooth theological faculty and the Mater Dei Institute have been given an annual subsidy of £400,000 each for the 1999 financial year; if this is a breach of Article 44(2)(2) of the Constitution; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15448/99]

I have approved core funding of £400,000 in 1999 for both the Pontifical University, Maynooth and the Mater Dei Institute of Education in respect of the Baccalaureate in theology and arts degree course and the bachelor of religious science respectively. These are lay courses.

The Attorney General's office has advised that this funding is constitutionally permissible.
