Vol. 507 No. 3

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Property.

Jack Wall

Question:

79 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence the position of the Curragh swimming pool; the proposed date for its repair; and the added facilities which will be available in the proposed refurbishment. [16656/99]

Consulting engineers engaged by my Department to advise on the works necessary to restore the swimming pool facilities at the Curragh Camp recommended a number of options for extensive upgrading and modernising of the existing installation and for the provision of a new complex, which would cater for the broader water-training requirements of Defence Forces personnel. Following examination of the recommendations, construction of a new pool was found to be the better value for money approach. The new pool, which will be a major improvement on the previous facility, will be linked to the existing gymnasium which is also to be upgraded. Detailed design work in connection with the preparation of tender documents is in progress. It is anticipated that a contract will be placed later this year and that work will be completed in about 12 months.

The pool will be fitted with the latest facilities to cater for the different requirements of the Army and Naval Service. It will include a diving pool for sub-aqua training and for the training of Air Corps personnel in escape procedures. It will also include a confidence-building, learner pool which will provide a safe pool facility for smaller children. This is a very important element given that the pool facility will continue to be made available to families of Defence Forces personnel and to schools in the Curragh area.
