Question:

84 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the value of fines imposed and goods confiscated, by category, in the past 12 months in relation to illegal fishing activities off Irish coasts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16978/99]

There were 20 convictions for sea fishery offences in 1998. The value of fines, forfeitures and costs imposed in respect of these cases was £300,625. This is comprised of £96,210 in respect of fines, £189,515 for forfeitures of fish and gear and £14,900 in relation to costs.
