Vol. 507 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Health Warning.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

144 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the action, if any, he will take to warn the public not to look at the sun using sunglasses, telescopes and camera lenses during the solar eclipse on 11 August 1999 in view of the possibility of irrevocable retina damage; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16869/99]

While I have no plans at present to initiate an awareness campaign as suggested by the Deputy, I am considering how best to inform the public as to the appropriate safety precautions. I am satisfied, however, that there will be sufficient information available at that time to members of the public as to the risks involved.
