Vol. 507 No. 3

Written Answers. - Breaking the Cycle Scheme.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

199 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will include scoil náisiúnta Ghort na Ceartan, Ardara, County Donegal, in the Breaking the Cycle scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16891/99]

The Breaking the Cycle pilot project was introduced on a pilot basis in 1996 and is scheduled to operate in the participating schools over a planned five year period.

The operation of the scheme is being closely monitored by my Department and is being evaluated by the Education Research Centre. The future of the scheme as a model for addressing educational disadvantage in urban and rural settings will be considered in the light of the findings of the evaluation report which is due to be completed in the year 2001.

The needs of the school referred to by the Deputy will be fully considered in the event of any expansion of the Breaking the Cycle pilot project being undertaken.
