Vol. 507 No. 4

Written Answers. - Register of Electors.

Noel Ahern

Question:

165 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the situation in relation to the rights to full votes in all elections of people born in the United Kingdom of Irish parents, holding or entitled to hold Irish passports, who are living here for many years; if these applicants can describe themselves as Irish and thereby qualify; and the process they can go through to be eligible. [17147/99]

Under electoral law and subject to fulfilling the remaining requirements for registration, Irish citizens may vote at every election and referendum; British citizens may vote at Dáil, European and local elections; other EU citizens may vote at European and local elections and non-EU citizens may vote at local elections only. The compilation of a register of electors is a matter for the appropriate registration authority who may require a person to provide any information, including information in relation to citizenship, in order for it to carry out its duties.

The law in relation to citizenship is a matter for the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
