Vol. 508 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Willie Penrose

Question:

123 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will give details of the assistance, including grants, which his Department makes available to an individual, partnership or company to set up a recycling plant operation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18440/99]

Under the EU-funded Operational Programme for Environmental Services 1994-99, grants in the order of £7.5 million have been approved in respect of over 70 projects involving the provision of recycling infrastructure by local authorities and the private sector. In addition, grants of some £2.5 million have been approved in respect of hazardous waste management facilities, including hazardous waste recovery infrastructure.

A policy statement on waste recycling and waste recovery generally is currently in preparation. This will address the factors and practical considerations relevant to achieving Government objectives and targets in this area, and will outline the scope of further measures which will be undertaken to assist local authorities and the recycling sector in securing a sustained improvement in recycling performance.
