Vol. 508 No. 5

Written Answers. - Extension of Boundary.

Austin Deasy

Question:

103 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received any application from Waterford Corporation regarding the extension of the Waterford city boundary into south Kilkenny. [19358/99]

Under the provisions of Part V of the Local Government Act, 1991, and the associated regulations, it is open at any time to an individual local authority to adopt a proposal to alter its boundary for administrative purposes. Before submitting a formal application to the Minister under Part V, the authority must first invite submissions both from the general public and from the other authorities concerned. In certain cases there is provision for the establishment of an independent boundary committee to examine all aspects of the proposal and make recommendations, following which the Minister may make an order altering the boundary. In the case of a county/city boundary such an order would also require the approval of both Houses of the Oireachtas. I have not received any such application in relation to the extension of the Waterford city boundary.
