161 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of farmers who were induced by ACOT and approved by his Department as participants in the farm modernisation scheme pursuant to Council Directive 72/159 EEC to modernise their farms through expanding their dairy herds, increasing their milk output and investing in the necessary milking facilities. Data on file in my Department in relation to the operation of the farm modernisation scheme are not in a format to enable provision of the information sought by the Deputy. However, Teagasc surveys which related to the period January 1979 to March 1984 indicate that some 13,000 farmers participating in the farm modernisation scheme were engaged in milk production.
