Written Answers. - Naturalisation Applications.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

284 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself that all of the successful applicants for naturalisation referred to in an article in a newspaper (details supplied) on 17 July 1999 met the requirements for naturalisation set out in the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1956; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19581/99]

Question:

285 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the files in relation to the granting of citizenship to Lebanese citizens referred to in an article in a newspaper (details supplied) on 17 July 1999 have been sent to the Moriarty tribunal; if so, when they were sent; and if they were sent on the initiative of himself or his Department or on foot of a request from the tribunal. [19582/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 284 and 285 together.

The persons to whom the Deputy refers were approved for naturalisation by predecessors of mine under the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act and it is not for me to answer as to how their decisions were reached nor would it be appropriate for me to comment on individual naturalisation cases.

Neither do I consider it appropriate to disclose whether or not files on particular individuals have been sent to the Moriarty tribunal beyond confirming that files on certain naturalisations have been sent. I can, of course, assure the House that I have co-operated fully with the tribunal.
