Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

106 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the degree to which it is intended to modernise facilities in Garda stations; if these facilities current or anticipated are in line with modern requirements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19752/99]

The accommodation requirements of the Garda Síochána were the subject of an in-depth examination in 1992-93, which sought, among other matters, to assess how the existing stock of Garda accommodation meets Garda needs, having regard to the changing nature of the force and the necessity to make the most efficient use of resources.

Arising from this study, comprehensive briefs of requirements were prepared for each type of Garda station, specifying required facilities in a modern policing arrangement. Every Garda station built since has conformed to these specifications, and major refurbishments of existing stations take account of these comprehensive briefs, where circumstances allow.
Moreover, my Department is continually engaged in evaluating and monitoring progress in the Garda building programme and maintenance plan, with a view to enhancing the standards of Garda accommodation, as resources allow and overall priorities dictate.
