Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

128 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans, if any, he has to sign into law a recommendation that the spring salmon angling season be postponed from 1 February 2000 on the basis of low salmon stock on the River Shannon, to include the lower Shannon and the tributary of the Mulcair where spring salmon stocks are increasing; if he will consult further before making a decision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19532/99]

I requested the regional fisheries boards this year, in consultation with all interests concerned, to advise me on "black spot" rivers where additional conservation measures to protect spring salmon stocks may be necessary next year. I have recently received a proposal from the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board recommending that the opening dates for game angling on the following rivers be delayed: Upper Shannon i.e. the Shannon above Parteen Weir to 1 May; Lower Shannon i.e. below Parteen Weir, Fergus, Deel, Maigue and Mulcair rivers to 1 April; River Feale to 1 May.

My decision will be informed by consultations with the Central Fisheries Board, the Marine Institute, the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board, angling groups and other interested parties. I have noted the Deputy's interest in this matter.
