Vol. 509 No. 5

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Ulick Burke

Question:

153 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to provide all second level schools with resources and facilities to provide physical education as a subject at leaving certificate level; the cost of such a provision; the number of second level schools already with these facilities; the number of schools in need of all or part of the requirements - if his Department has trained physical education teachers to provide tuition at this level and the capacity of the planning section of his Department to deliver the building programme involved in this provision; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment is working on the development of a new syllabus for leaving certificate physical education.

When the NCCA's work nears completion, a thorough assessment of the needs emerging as a consequence of the introduction of the new syllabus will be undertaken.
