Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Communications Masts.

Enda Kenny

Question:

171 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the arrangements, if any, she has entered into with providers of mobile phone systems and communications with specific reference to the provision of masts; her views on the fact that in many cases no notice is given or consultation held giving rise to legitimate fears and concerns among local communities; the plans, if any, she has to deal with this on an ongoing basis; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21039/99]

I have not entered into any arrangements with providers of mobile phone systems and communications in regard to the provision of masts. This is primarily an issue for the operators to arrange themselves, while having due regard to the relevant legislation.

The rules governing the establishment of telecommunications masts, including the requirements, if any, regarding notification and consultation, are matters for planning legislation which is the responsibility of my colleague, Deputy Dempsey, Minister for the Environment and Local Government.
