Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

297 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Finance if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 205 of 19 October 1999, the plans, if any, he has to address the pension contributions of people under 50 years who availed of jobsharing schemes in the Civil Service, as it would appear that most jobsharers were young women who want to spend time with their families; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21429/99]

In my answer to Deputy Clune's Question No. 205 of 19 October 1999, I said that Civil Service job-sharers who expect to have less than the maximum pensionable service at retirement and have been job-sharing for at least five years, can, under special agreed arrangements, purchase additional years of service to augment their ultimate pension benefits. These arrangements also apply to those who are at least 50 years of age at the time they commence job-sharing, but in their case the five year qualifying period does not apply. A letter was sent to all personnel officers in the Civil Service dated 17 June 1994 ref. P18/7/94 which gives the details of the scheme and I have arranged for a copy of this to be sent to the Deputy for information.
