Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Nursing Staff.

Michael Creed

Question:

351 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of non-national nurses recruited by health boards and voluntary hospitals for each of the past five years; and the number of agency nurses employed by each health board and voluntary hospital for the past five years. [21419/99]

The details the Deputy requests are not available in my Department.

However, the Deputy may wish to note that the number of nurses trained outside of the European Union and registered by An Bord Altranais in each of the last five years is as follows: 1998 – 95 general nurses and one midwife; 1997 – 90 general nurses and two midwives; 1996 – 58 general nurses and one midwife; 1995 – 46 general nurses and one midwife; 1994 – 63 general nurses.

The number of nurses trained in the European Union outside Ireland and registered by An Bord Altranais in each of the last five years is set out in the table below. These nurses tend to be Irish nationals in the main.

The Deputy may also wish to note that in 1998 health agencies spent approximately £13.5 million on agency nurses – this equates to over 500 full-time nurses.
