Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Enda Kenny

Question:

389 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of patients on a waiting list for physiotherapy in St. James's Hospital, the Mater Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital; the way in which he expects to deal with these waiting lists; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21813/99]

The number of patients awaiting physiotherapy in the hospitals referred to by the Deputy is as follows: St James's Hospital – 217; Mater Misericordiae Hospital – 142; St Vincent's Hospital – Nil.

Patients are assessed at points of referral, i.e. accident and emergency, fracture clinics and general practitioner referrals with urgent cases, determined by clinical need, given priority for treatment. Physiotherapy departments monitor waiting lists on a regular basis and implement local initiatives to ensure that there no undue delays in providing treatment to patients.
