Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax on Plastic Bags.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

399 Ms Clune asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to introduce a tax on plastic bags; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21918/99]

Nora Owen

Question:

443 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when he will introduce mechanisms to reduce the use of plastic bags; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21704/99]

I propose to take Question Nos. 399 and 443 together.

I refer to the reply to Questions Nos. 70 and 93 of 5 October 1999. I will bring forward proposals to implement the Government commitment to tax plastic bags, as a mechanism to reduce their use, following consideration of the submissions and comments received during the recent public consultation process.
