Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

407 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will appoint a consultant for the Kenmare water supply improvement scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21240/99]

Preliminary proposals for a water supply improvement scheme for Kenmare were submitted to my Department in December 1996, but have not been approved. A consultant cannot, therefore, be appointed for the next stage of scheme.

As the scheme is not included in the 1999 water services investment programme it comes within the terms of my Department's circular letter L9/98 of 22 October 1998. This circular asked each local authority to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in its area and to prepare a prioritised list of projects based on the assessment. The scheme is eighth in Kerry County Council's provisional priority list. The priority lists will be taken into consideration by my Department when framing future water and sewerage service investment programmes under the National Development Plan 2000-2006.
