Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Judgment Debts.

John Browne

Question:

532 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, to lower the 8 per cent charge on judgment mortgages in view of the fact that interest rates have dropped. [21643/99]

My Department regularly reviews the rate of interest on judgment debts in the context of prevailing interest rates. At 8 per cent, the rate of interest which currently applies is not considered to be unduly penal in the context of encouraging prompt payment of an established judgment debt. I am not, therefore, proposing to change the rate at this time.
