Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Physical Education Facilities.

John McGuinness

Question:

582 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress, if any, made in the design of a new size gym to be used as a national model for schools countrywide which need the facility. [21334/99]

Earlier this year I decided that the size of new PE halls being provided in post-primary schools should be increased. Schools that have an enrolment in excess of 450 pupils or more may be provided with a PE hall amounting to 608 square metres plus ancillary accommodation. Schools that have an enrolment of less than 450 pupils may be provided with a PE hall amounting to 406 square metres plus ancillary accommodation. Staff of the building unit of my Department are currently designing a set of plans for each of the two new sizes of PE halls. It is considered that these plans will be completed early next year.
