Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Status.

John McGuinness

Question:

605 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will extend the disadvantaged status of St. John's junior school, Kilkenny, to cover St. John's senior school, Kilkenny, in view of the fact that both schools draw from the same pool of students in a disadvantaged area of the city. [21404/99]

St. John's senior school, Kilkenny, has been included in the disadvantaged areas scheme since 1994 and as such receives the special funding allocations made to all schools with disadvantaged status.

I am aware of the case made by this school for the allocation of a concessionary teacher post to address problems of educational disadvantage in the school. Such posts have not been allocated to schools since 1993. Since that time, available posts have been used to support the breaking the cycle of disadvantage initiative which is targeting schools with particularly high levels of disadvantage.

I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the school to which he refers will be fully considered in the event of additional initiatives being taken to address educational disadvantage.
