Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

624 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction a concessionary post, a post of learning support teacher and post for two special needs assistants for St. Patrick's infants national school, Gardiner Hill, Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21566/99]

I am aware of the case made by the school, referred to by the Deputy, for the allocation of a concessionary teacher post to address problems of educational disadvantage in the school.

I can assure the Deputy that the needs of the school to which he refers will be fully considered in the event of any additional initiatives being taken to address educational disadvantage.

My Department has received an application for two special needs assistant posts and a resource teacher post from the school in question.

My Department's inspectorate is currently investigating the application for the two special needs assistants and the resource teacher posts. A report is expected shortly on the level of support required.
