Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Paul McGrath

Question:

637 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department has sanctioned the purchase of a piece of land at St. Etchen's national school, Kinnegad, County Westmeath, to be used for a car park at this school; the costs involved in this purchase; the moneys available to develop this area as a carpark and sports area; and the plans, if any, he has for the future development of this school in Kinnegad in view of the rapid growth of the population in this area. [21696/99]

My Department has only recently received a request to upgrade car parking at St. Etchen's national school, Kinnegad. A site report has been requested and the matter will be examined as soon as possible.

An application was received from the chairperson of St. Etchen's national school in May of this year for additional classroom accommodation to cater for increased pupil numbers in the area.

Two temporary classrooms were provided to address immediate needs at the school. Long-term requirements are currently being assessed in consultation with the local Inspector and the school authorities.
