John Bruton

Question:

143 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, he has to meet with Ireland's EU Commissioner, Mr. Byrne; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18906/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 77 and 143 together.

I have not had correspondence with Commissioner Byrne since he took up his appointment in the Commission in September and have no immediate plans to meet with him.

I would, of course, expect in the period ahead to have appropriate contact with Commissioner Byrne, as with other members of the Commission, in the context of the ongoing conduct of EU business.

As the Deputy will be aware, in general, Ministers' most frequent contacts with Members of the Commission tend to be with their direct counterparts.
