Vol. 510 No. 2

Written Answers. - Retail Sector.

Derek McDowell

Question:

16 Mr. McDowell asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will introduce regulations which would require retailers to display the cost price of goods as well as their selling price; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22000/99]

The powers under which price display orders have been made, such as the Retail Price (Diesel and Petrol) Display Order, 1997 and the Retail Price (Beverages in Licensed Premises) Display Order, 1999, which I recently made, are contained in section 19 of the Prices Act, 1958 as amended. That provision relates to retail prices only and, accordingly, could not be used to make regulations of the type referred to by the Deputy in his question. I have no plans to introduce primary legislation to require retailers to display the cost price of goods.
