Vol. 510 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flammability of Clothing.

David Stanton

Question:

64 Mr. Stanton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if, further to Parliamentary Question Nos. 39 of 9 December 1997 and 115 of 30 June 1998, the Director of Consumer Affairs and the National Standards Authority of Ireland have responded to her request to review the issue of flammability of clothing; the recommendations if any, they have made on future steps which might be taken in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22026/99]

I am asking the Director of Consumer Affairs and the National Standards Authority of Ireland jointly to report to me within three months on the review and recommendations which I requested some time ago.

As to the underlying issue of flammability of clothing, I am informed that Technical Committee 248 of the European Committee for Standardisation (–) CEN(–) acting on a mandate from the European Commission, provided a feasibility study report which is at present under consideration by the European Commission. I am informed that the National Standards Authority of Ireland will continue to monitor ongoing developments at European level on the question of flammability of clothing and will ensure that Irish interests are well represented.
