Vol. 510 No. 2

Written Answers. - Redundancy Payments.

David Stanton

Question:

73 Mr. Stanton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of valid claims processed by her Department under the Redundancy Payments Acts, 1967 and 1991, and the Protection of Employees (Employers' Insolvency) Acts, 1984 to 1991; the number of payments, if any, made and the amount of money involved over the past two years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22036/99]

The Deputy has asked for figures for two years and I will provide statistics for the years 1997 and 1998 respectively, with an update on the position so far in 1999. The total number of valid claims processed by my Department under the Redundancy Payments Acts, 1967 to 1991, for 1997 and 1998, was 10,822 and 9,941 respectively. The total amount of money paid out from the Social Insurance Fund was £16.7 million in 1997 and £13.9 million in 1998. For the nine month period up to September 1999, the number of valid claims processed was 9,050. Expenditure from the Fund in respect of redundancy was £13.4 million.

I would like to turn now to the statistics requested under the Protection of Employees (Employers' Insolvency) Acts, 1984 to 1991. The total number of valid claims processed for 1997 and 1998 by my Department covered 3,209 and 3,481 employees respectively. The total amount of expenditure for 1997 and 1998 was £1.96 million and £1.68 million respectively.

For the nine month period up to September 1999, the number of employees covered by claims processed under these Acts was 3,337 and the total amount paid was £1.73 million. The total number of payments made for each of the years was 479 in 1997; 466 in 1998 and 256 to end September 1999. As payments are made to employer representatives, that is, liquidators, receivers etc. each payment includes groups of employees.
