Vol. 510 No. 2

Written Answers. - CIE Superannuation Schemes.

Noel Ahern

Question:

97 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the position with alterations to the CIE clerical, executive and supervisory superannuation fund; if objections and submissions to the proposed changes have been fully considered; if decisions have been arrived at and approval for changes given; the position in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22109/99]

The introduction of amendments to the CIE salaried staff superannuation schemes, which in turn depends on the amalgamation of the funds of the schemes, was delayed for some time because of major legal difficulties with the process.

Primary legislation was required to resolve the difficulties. The necessary provisions were enacted recently in the Road Transport Act 1999. These provisions provided the legal basis for CIE to proceed with the amendments to these schemes.

The company has recently submitted the draft amending schemes to me for confirmation. The draft schemes are currently being vetted from a legal and technical perspective and I will ensure that this is progressed as quickly as possible.

As soon as the vetting process is completed, the company will make copies of the schemes available for inspection for 28 days at its main offices. This is a statutory procedure designed to allow for objections to be made to the amending schemes. If there are any objections I will have to consider them before making a decision as to whether to formally confirm the amending schemes.
