Vol. 510 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

134 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide increasing funding to the national community games organisation to mark the millennium year; his views on whether the total Government funding of less than £130,000 is sufficient commitment to an organisation which deals with over 500,000 young people; his views on whether a contribution should be at least £1 per person as a gesture of goodwill and commitment to youth activities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22962/99]

The Minister for Finance has no function in relation to this matter. Following the enactment of the Sports Council Act, 1999, in July of this year responsibility for the funding of the national community games organisation, and all other national governing bodies of sport, was transferred from the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation to the council. The issue of funding for the community games is now an operational matter for the Sports Council.
