Vol. 510 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drug Dealing.

Tony Gregory

Question:

172 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the areas outside Dublin where the Garda have evidence of heroin dealing. [22796/99]

The Garda authorities have informed me that intelligence indicates that there is small scale heroin use outside Dublin. In the recent past there have been a small number of heroin seizures in Athlone, Cork and Limerick, which have resulted in a number of persons being charged under the Misuse of Drugs Acts, 1977 and 1984.

The following table sets out the number of Misuse of Drugs Act offences involving heroin, where proceedings commenced by region in each of the years 1996, 1997 and 1998 as per the annual report of An Garda Síochána. In each year, more than 98 per cent of the offences were recorded in the Dublin Metropolitan Region.
