Vol. 510 No. 4

Written Answers. - Courts Service.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

178 Ms Coughlan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if consideration will be given for the return of the District Court to Ballybofey, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22830/99]

Discussions took place earlier this year between officials of my Department, Donegal County Council and the local district court judge regarding court premises in County Donegal. It emerged at that meeting that there was no suitable venue available in Ballybofey-Stranorlar for district court sittings and this remains the position at present.

The matter is being kept under review and has recently been the subject of consultations between the chief executive designate of the new courts service and the local authority. I understand that further consultations between the newly established courts service and the local authority, Judiciary and other court users are planned with a view to considering the restoration of a court presence in Ballybofey.
