Vol. 510 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

John Bruton

Question:

180 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will appoint additional gardaí to Navan, County Meath, in view of the fact the population of the area has increased greatly over the past number of years and current manpower is stretched to the limit to cope with the volume of calls; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22832/99]

The detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities who have informed me that the current personnel strength of Navan Garda station, as of 31 October 1999, is 47 – all ranks.

The Garda authorities have also informed me that Navan Garda station is open to the public on a 24 hour basis. There are four official vehicles allocated to it and these are utilised in patrolling the area. This patrolling is also augmented as necessary by other resources from within the Meath-Louth Garda Division.

I have been further informed that the situation in relation to Navan will be kept under review and when additional personnel next become available, the needs of Navan will be fully considered in the overall context of the needs of the other Garda divisions and districts throughout the country.
