Vol. 510 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Question:

197 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teachers dismissed from the primary and secondary level sectors in each of the past five year; the reason in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22943/99]

Dismissal of teachers in primary, voluntary secondary, community and comprehensive schools is a matter for the authorities of the school concerned. In the event of a teacher in any of these sectors being dismissed, the school authorities are required to notify my Department accordingly. However, they are not required to indicate the reason for dismissal.

Vocational teachers may be removed from office by the Minister or by the relevant vocational education committee with the approval of the Minister.

Details of the number of teachers dismissed in the past five years and the reasons therefor are given on the following table.
