Vol. 510 No. 4

Written Answers. - Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997.

John Bruton

Question:

50 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he has considered requiring those claiming tax exemption under section 231 of the Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997, to provide a return of income in regard to the exempt income in order to mitigate any possibility of the use of this section for money laundering of money derived from purposes other than that designed to be encouraged by the section. [17463/99]

I have no plans to amend the current legislation in the manner proposed by the Deputy. I have no information suggesting the use of section 231 of the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 in such a manner so as to facilitate money laundering. If the Deputy has such information, I ask him to make it known to the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
