Vol. 510 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tobacco (Health Promotion and Protection) Act.

Paul Bradford

Question:

37 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Health and Children if a company (details supplied) in County Dublin sought approval for the provision by it of £400,000 for the restoration of the saloon and grand stairwell at Newman House, St. Stephen's Green, Dublin, or for the provision of £100,000 for the restoration of the formal gardens at Birr Castle, County Offaly; and if he regards the provision of these funds for the purposes as stated as sponsorship within the meaning of the Tobacco (Health Promotion and Protection) Act, 1988. [22190/99]

I am advised that no approval was sought from my Department for the specific expenditure referred to by the Deputy.

Corporate gifts or donations given by tobacco companies free of any demand or obligation on the recipient in relation to the promotion of a tobacco product or brand would not be regarded as sponsorship within the meaning of the Act.
