Vol. 510 No. 5

Written Answers. - Consultant Appointments.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

50 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health and Children the steps, if any, being taken to meet the need for additional consultant posts in general internal medicine; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22845/99]

The need for additional consultant medical posts is considered on an ongoing basis by agencies and by Comhairle na n-Ospidéal in the context of the many competing demands for resources throughout the health services.

According to Comhairle na n-Ospidéal figures, there has been an increase of 10 per cent, from 35 to 39, in the total number of consultant posts in general medicine since the end of 1997.
