Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - Hydrofluosilicic Acid.

John Gormley

Question:

210 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide the most detailed chemical analysis of hydrofluosilicic acid agents on behalf of his Department and purchased by the Eastern Health Board; if the liquid imported is 28 per cent by weight H2SiF6 which refers to a substance which is only 28 per cent pure; the composition of the other 72 per cent of this liquid; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23159/99]

The contract for the supply of hydrofluosilicic acid to the required specification is arranged by the Eastern Health Board on behalf of all health boards. I understand from the Eastern Health Board that the contractor receives 28 per cent H2SiF6 in bulk containers from suppliers in Holland. The composition of the remaining 72 per cent is potable water. The material is diluted to a 14 per cent solution prior to transportation to the water reservoirs as required by the local authority.

The most recent certification of laboratory analysis for a consignment to a local authority showed 14.01 per cent fluosilicic acid by weight and heavy metals as less than 0.012 per cent when expressed as lead.
