Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Poison Centre.

John Gormley

Question:

218 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the USA has local poison centres warning users to contact them if more than a pea size amount of fluoride toothpaste is swallowed; his views on whether similar local control poison centres are required here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23208/99]

The National Poison Centre is based in Beaumont Hospital and is equipped to deal with and give advice on all aspects of poisoning. This advice is available to hospitals at regional level.

My Department agrees with the advice that a pea size amount of toothpaste should be used, especially by children. Campaigns to support this advice on radio, television and in schools have taken place. This advice is also transmitted through the dental profession generally.
