Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - IMB Enforcement Limit.

Bernard Allen

Question:

228 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on the recent decision by the Irish Medicines Board to reject a proposal from his Department that pharmaceutical companies should pay for the cost of establishing a major new enforcement unit. [23227/99]

Discussions have taken place between my Department and the Irish medicines board concerning the funding and staffing requirements involved in establishing an enforcement unit within the IMB. The enforcement function will be carried out by the medicines board in the interest of protecting public health and ensuring compliance with the relevant legislation in this area. While the necessary resources are already available to fund this function, the question of the source of this funding in the future will be kept under continuous review.
