Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Representation.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

363 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the fact that Garda representation in the Inishown area has been reduced by over 25 per cent in the past 20 years despite the fact that the area is increasingly becoming a suburb of Derry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23504/99]

The detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources to an individual area is a matter for the Garda authorities who have informed me that the current personnel strength of Buncrana Garda District, as of 31/10/99, is 74 – all ranks.

I am also informed that the Inishowen area is policed by members from the Buncrana District. The personnel strength of Buncrana Garda district in the 1980's was 105 – all ranks. There was an increase in Garda personnel, at this time, primarily for the purpose of policing the Border area.

The Garda authorities have further informed me that they are satisfied that the current personnel strength of Buncrana district is adequate to meet the demands currently placed upon it. The situation will, however, be monitored and reviewed with a view to ensuring that a satisfactory policing service is maintained.
