Ulick Burke

Question:

56 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to introduce a new MOT test for school buses in line with the recommendation of the Joint Committee on Education and Science; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23427/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 48 and 56 together.

I have recently received a copy of this report and I am arranging to have its recommendations in relation to school transport safety examined in my Department. In accordance with an already stated commitment of the Government strategy on road safety, my Department has been working with the Department of Education and Science to develop proposals for improving school bus safety which it is intended to publish for public consultation in the coming months. The new report will be of assistance to this process.
