Written Answers. - Port Business.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

109 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the volume of business in both Dundalk and Drogheda ports in each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23180/99]

The volume of business for the years 1996 to 1998 for the two ports in question is outlined in the following table:

In line with economic buoyancy seaport trade nationally is rising with most ports experiencing growth rates of up to 10 % annually in the last number of years.
Despite congestion problems and disruption arising from the recent major infrastructural development and capital dredging, Drogheda Port has performed remarkably well. It is attracting new shipping business and continues to expand its customer base and business.
Dundalk Port has experienced modest expansion and continues to provide a valuable service to its port users and trade. Dundalk is categorised as one of the top regional ports in commercial terms.
As the Deputy is aware, I recently published a major independent review of the State's 16 commercial regional ports and harbours including Dundalk Harbour. The recommendation in the review in relation to Dundalk that the commissioners be offered the opportunity to make a case for themselves to become a commercial State company has been endorsed by me. The commissioners are currently engaged in the preparation of their case and I am advised will shortly present a plan showing how they can cater for the requirements of corporatisation.
Following publication of the regional ports study, I initiated a full consultative process. While I am aware that the consultants met and took on board the views of relevant interests, including those of the port authorities and management and other interested State, tourism and local commercial development bodies, I believe that it is essential that all stakeholders and interests including harbour authorities are given an opportunity to comment on the recommendations which emerged from the review in advance of any decisions being made.
On conclusion of the consultative process, I will be bringing fully costed and developed proposals to Government for consideration including determinations on the most appropriate and beneficial operational and management structures for each regional port.
