Vol. 511 No. 1

Written Answers. - Offshore Islands.

Enda Kenny

Question:

164 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the position regarding provision of a cable car for access to Inisbiggle Island, County Mayo; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23864/99]

The Deputy may be aware that, earlier this year, I appointed the engineering consultants, P.J. Tobin and Company Limited to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the case compiled by Comhar Bigil Teo for the provision of a cablecar link between Inis Bigil and the mainland. This appraisal included an evaluation of the methodology and findings of the case made as well as other considerations such as the optimum size of a cablecar, maintenance, general efficiency, current costs, capital costs, level of income likely to be generated and an effective administrative structure for the operation of the proposed cablecar system.

The result of this study showed the provision of a cablecar as being feasible and of economic benefit to the island and to the development of the region in general.

Urgent consideration is being given to this application and a decision will be made on this in the near future.
