Vol. 511 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inheritance Tax.

Ulick Burke

Question:

101 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to revise upwards or index link the inheritance tax liabilities of many people who find themselves with an intolerable burden due to the escalation in house and property prices; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23765/99]

I have indicated to the Dáil earlier this year, in the course of the Finance Bill debate, and in response to parliamentary questions in recent months, that I am aware of the tax burden facing certain individuals, particularly on the inheritance of the family home where they had been residing. I undertook that I would examine the capital acquisitions tax code, including inheritance tax, in detail for the forthcoming budget. This examination is currently taking place.
