I propose to take Questions Nos. 131, 138 and 139 together.

The following data have been supplied by Comhairle na nOspidéal, which is the statutory body with responsibility to regulate the number and type of consultant appointments in hospitals providing services under the Health Act 1970.

The percentage of women occupying permanent consultant posts in the years 1980, 1990 and 1994 to 1998, inclusive, was as follows:

Permanent (Female)

Year

Consultants in Post

*1980*

c. 8% (90)

1990

12.9% (130)

1994

16.0% (172)

1995

17.0% (178)

1996

18.1% (206)

1997

18.5% (220)

1998

19.5% (242)

*The data for 1980 are approximate. In 1980 neither the sex nor names of those appointments were recorded, only their initials, and based on this information and analysis of retirements to date, the figure supplied was constructed by comhairle.
In relation to the questions asked by the Deputy regarding the number of consultants appointed to public hospitals since 1990 and the number of those who were female, Comhairle na nOspidéal have supplied the following figures.
Between 1 January 1990 and 15 November 1999 – 609 permanent consultants have been appointed. The male-female breakdown is – male – 454 (74.5%) and female – 155 (25.5%).
