Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers Scheme.

Enda Kenny

Question:

182 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance if he will extend the disabled drivers and disabled passengers tax refund scheme to blind car passengers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24068/99]

Gay Mitchell

Question:

186 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance if he has received the report of the interdepartmental review of the 1994 disabled drivers and disabled passengers tax refund scheme; and the changes, if any, proposed as a result of the submission of the blind car owners and users association. [24086/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 182 and 186 together.

There are demands that the disabled drivers' and disabled passengers' (tax concessions) Scheme be extended to many categories, including to the blind. The combined effect of any such

extension would be costly.

As I have informed the House on a number of occasions, I await the report of the interdepartmental review group under the chair of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. Pending receipt of that report, I do not consider that it is prudent for me to comment on the scheme one way or another.
