Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Michael Ring

Question:

255 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding a sewerage scheme for Geesala, Ballina, County Mayo; and if Mayo County Council has submitted an application for funding for this scheme. [24117/99]

A brief for the Geesala sewerage scheme was submitted to my Department in 1995 but has not been approved. Schemes not included in the 1999 water and sewerage services investment programme come within the terms of my Department's circular letter L9/98 of 22 October 1998, which asked each local authority to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in its area and to prepare a prioritised list of projects based on the assessment. The priority lists will be taken into consideration by my Department in framing future water and sewerage services investment programmes under the recently published National Development Plan 2000-2006. The Geesala sewerage scheme is 27th in Mayo County Council's priority list of sewerage schemes.

Question:

256 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding a sewerage scheme in Saleen, Castlebar, County Mayo; if funding is available for the project; if the project has been designed and planned; and when the work will commence. [24118/99]

Proposals for a sewerage scheme to serve this area are included in the preliminary report for the Castlebar environs sewerage scheme which was approved by my Department in 1997 and is included in the 1999 water and sewerage services investment programme to be advanced through planning. I understand that Mayo County Council are currently reviewing the scope of the preliminary report and my Department is awaiting any revised proposals that may result from the review.
