Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Appeals.

Michael Ring

Question:

268 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a farm assist appeal for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be finalised. [24142/99]

The person concerned was disallowed farm assist on the grounds that his means, derived from farm income and his wife's earnings, exceed the statutory limit. An appeal against this decision has been made and, in accordance with statutory requirements, a submission on the matters raised in the appeal is being prepared.

The case will then be referred to an appeals officer for consideration as soon as possible.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

269 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason a person (details supplied) in County Laois had unemployment assistance terminated leaving him with no income and dependent upon his parents, both of whom are dependent on social welfare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24144/99]

The person concerned was disallowed unemployment assistance on the grounds that he was not genuinely seeking employment. Following an oral appeal hearing an appeals officer found that the person concerned was not genuinely seeking employment and the appeal was disallowed.

The case is under review at present following the submission of additional information to my Department. A decision on entitlement to unemployment assistance in the light of this information will be made as soon as possible.
